Pressure-Treated and Cedar Lumber Construction Options

Pressure-treated Southern yellow pine handles structural work — posts, beams, joists, ledger boards — and it does that job well at a price point that keeps projects accessible. Cedar is the better choice for decking boards: it's naturally rot-resistant, lighter, and takes stain well without the chemical smell that comes off fresh pressure-treated material. We use both throughout Oakland County depending on what the application calls for.

Our wood installations use structural-grade lumber with verified moisture content for outdoor use. Decking screws are stainless steel or coated at consistent spacing, with pre-drilling near board ends to prevent splitting. Structural members carry the grade stamps required for their application — ground contact where posts meet grade, above-ground rating for elevated framing. All structural connections use hardware rated for outdoor exposure, not interior-grade fasteners.

Oakland County homeowners who choose wood get detailed maintenance guidance from us: when to apply the first sealer, what products hold up in Michigan's climate, and what an annual inspection should cover. A well-maintained wood deck delivers decades of service. One that doesn't get maintenance attention starts cupping, splitting, and growing mold within a few seasons.
