Pressure-Treated and Cedar Lumber Deck Construction
Pressure-treated Southern yellow pine and Western red cedar are both solid choices for Oakland County when they're installed correctly. Pressure-treated lumber handles structural framing well — it resists decay and carries load at a price point that keeps the project budget manageable. Cedar is a better decking board: it's naturally rot-resistant, dimensionally stable, and doesn't require chemical treatment to hold up outdoors in Michigan's climate.
We install decking with stainless steel or coated screws at consistent spacing, pre-drill near board ends to prevent splitting, and leave appropriate expansion gaps. Structural members — ledger boards, beams, joists, posts — are graded and stamped for their application, whether ground contact or above-ground. We can apply an initial sealer or stain after the wood has dried adequately, and we provide a maintenance schedule so Metro Detroit homeowners know what the deck needs to perform for decades.
