A garage door is one of the largest visual elements on the front of most Oakland County homes. On a two-car attached garage, it can account for nearly a third of the front elevation. When siding is freshly painted but the garage door is chalky and faded, it dominates the eye. Steel doors in particular develop an oxidized surface layer that won't hold paint without specific prep — the oxidation has to come off and the surface etched before primer bonds.
Our garage door process: degrease thoroughly, sand for adhesion, mask all hardware including tracks, springs, hinges, and weather seals, then apply primer and finish coats with HVLP spray back-rolled for a smooth surface without brush marks or orange peel. For wood doors, prep time increases on any existing paint failures and we use a water-based primer that won't raise grain. Shutters come down when possible so we can paint both sides and let them cure before reinstalling. Decorative brackets, dentil molding, window headers, and architectural trim elements get careful brush work to cover every profile edge.
Southeast Michigan homeowners completing a full exterior refresh often see the highest visual return from garage door and detail painting. A repainted garage door coordinated with the shutter and trim color ties the whole exterior palette together. We match colors precisely to the selected scheme and use coatings rated for the specific material being painted — steel, aluminum, vinyl, or wood composite.
