Exterior Trim Work
Wood trim around windows and doors takes more punishment than any other part of the exterior. Rain runs off the roof and concentrates at the fascia. Moisture wicks up from grade into corner boards. Paint fails first at the corners and butt joints, and once rot starts it spreads fast. We replace deteriorated trim with cellular PVC from AZEK or Versatex — it won't rot, holds paint for years, and machines and installs the same way as wood.
We use PVC cement at joints for a clean, seamless connection and stainless or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners to prevent rust staining. Butt joints get proper gapping for thermal movement — PVC expands more than wood across Michigan's temperature range, and joints that are too tight buckle in summer heat. We also build custom profiles using PVC stock: window headers, rake board returns, decorative brackets.
For Oakland County homeowners who prefer primed wood, we install finger-jointed primed pine and primed composites as well. Whatever material we use, we prime all cut ends before installation. That step gets skipped most often on trim work, and it's exactly where rot starts.
