Ridge and Soffit Ventilation System Upgrades

Attic ventilation has two jobs in Michigan: keep the roof deck cold and uniform in winter so ice dams don't form, and exhaust heat in summer so shingles don't bake from below. Both require balanced airflow — intake through soffit vents at the eave, movement across the underside of the deck, and exhaust through the ridge. If soffit intake is blocked or insufficient, the ridge vent doesn't work regardless of its size.
We calculate net free area requirements based on your attic square footage, then audit what's actually installed. A common problem on Oakland County homes is that soffit vents were never cut through or were blocked during insulation work. We cut in additional vented soffit panels, install or replace continuous ridge vent, and remove vent types that create short circuits — box vents and gable vents pull air through a short path instead of driving it across the full deck, and they should come out when ridge vent is installed.
Proper ventilation extends shingle life by reducing thermal cycling stress, lowers summer cooling costs by exhausting attic heat, and is one of the most reliable tools for preventing ice dams. We typically do ventilation upgrades during roof replacements when the deck is already exposed. We also perform them as standalone projects on roofs that are failing prematurely because the attic runs too hot.
