Whole-House Rewiring for Aluminum and Knob-and-Tube Replacement

Aluminum branch circuit wiring was common in Oakland County homes built between roughly 1965 and 1973, when copper prices spiked. Aluminum wiring isn't inherently dangerous, but it expands and contracts more than copper under thermal cycling. Over decades, those cycles loosen connections at outlets, switches, and junction boxes. Loose connections arc. Arcing causes fires. The documented fix is either full replacement or CO/ALR rated devices and anti-oxidant compound at every connection point — full replacement is the more reliable long-term solution.
Knob-and-tube wiring, found in homes built before roughly 1940, was designed to radiate heat into open air space. Decades of insulation installed over and around it have eliminated that cooling path. Overloaded knob-and-tube circuits in insulated walls run hot. We replace deteriorated knob-and-tube wiring when walls and ceilings are open during renovation work.
Whole-house rewiring is planned to minimize wall and ceiling openings. We use flexible drill bits, fish tape, and strategic access points at outlet box locations, attic access, and basement connections to pull wire through existing cavities. Where drywall must be cut, we make clean openings and patch them to match. Every circuit lands on a properly sized breaker in a new or upgraded panel. The permit and final inspection verify outlet spacing, AFCI and GFCI placement, and load center labeling — homeowners get that signed-off documentation for their insurance carrier and their records.
