Level 5 Skim Coating for Ultra-Smooth Wall Finishes

Level 5 finish means the entire wall and ceiling surface is skim-coated — not just the joints and fasteners. There's no texture variation when light rakes across the wall. It's the right spec for rooms with high-gloss paint, metallic finishes, or wallpaper where any imperfection shows. We do Level 5 skim coating for Metro Detroit homeowners who want walls that look and feel like polished plaster.
The process starts after standard Level 4 taping and finishing is complete. A thin, uniform coat of premium joint compound gets applied across every square foot of wall and ceiling surface using wide finishing knives. Once dry, the surface is sanded under strong side-lighting that reveals ridges, tool marks, and thin spots. Any area that doesn't meet the standard gets another skim coat and is resanded.
Level 5 is an additional labor investment that pays off in specific situations. Oakland County homeowners in rooms with abundant natural light or wall-grazing accent lighting sometimes discover that standard Level 4 walls show more texture than they want once the paint goes on. Requesting Level 5 upfront costs less than coming back to skim coat after everything else is done.
