A freestanding tub filled with water can weigh 600 to 800 pounds before anyone gets in. Before we set a tub, we assess the subfloor framing and reinforce it if needed — doubled joists, blocking, or a structural panel over the existing floor deck depending on what's there. That's not a step that gets skipped; it's what separates a tub that sits stable and solid from one that flexes and cracks the surrounding tile.
Plumbing placement for a freestanding tub is different from a built-in tub-surround. The drain line runs to a floor drain, and the supply lines come up through the floor for a floor-mount filler — or through the wall for a wall-mount filler if we're running new supply lines anyway. We plan filler placement and tile work together so the finished floor reads as a single intentional surface with no awkward transitions around the drain.
For Victoria + Albert, Barclay, Kohler, and similar freestanding tub lines, we verify rough-in requirements for each specific model before finalizing floor layout and tile planning. Oakland County homeowners working with us on a primary suite conversion get a tub installation that's properly supported, properly plumbed, and surrounded by tile and finishes that were designed to work with the tub — not added around it after the fact.
